Ebook About
Julian Weems doesn’t believe in aliens, cryptids, ESP, pineapple on his pizza, or ghosts.Oscar Fellowes is determined to change his mind about at least two of those things.Julian Weems is a professional skeptic. Scratch that—he’s a disgraced ex-professor who just plays one on TV. Specifically, on UnReality’s soon-to-be-hit, Bump in the Night. Alongside medium Oscar Fellowes, Julian is set to investigate (alleged!) hauntings and get to the bottom of some old mysteries. That thumping sound upstairs? Floorboards settling. The cabinets that won’t stay closed? Old hinges. The disembodied voices, flying dishes, and crying maid who disappears in front of your very eyes? Well, there’s explanations for those, too. Oscar has plenty of them. Just not anything Julian can accept. You don’t have to believe in ghosts for them to believe in you.Oscar Fellowes has dealt with skeptics his entire life. None of them have ever been quite like Julian Weems, though. He doesn’t have to be an empath to pick up on the mutual attraction between them and he’s willing to overlook—for now—Julian’s adamant refusal to accept what’s happening around them. The Hendricks family who died over a century ago haven’t left their house, and they want help. The dead demand justice before they can rest in peace and their anger seems strong enough to reach between worlds. Bump in the Night is a paranormal romance and book one in a series. It can be read as a standalone but has elements that will continue throughout the rest of the series, including a growing romance between the resident skeptic and professional medium.

Book Bump in the Night (Medium at Large Book 1) Review :

I received a copy of the planned second edition release of this book in exchange for my honest opinion, and I can honestly say I'm struggling to find anything positive to say about it. The best I can come up with is that I'm a lightweight when it comes to anything scary or involving horror, and this book did not scare me at all. The book is unfocused and rough around the edges. I had a very hard time getting into it, and the book could not decide what it wanted to be. It tried to be a romance, a paranormal investigation, a murder mystery times two, and it did not succeed on any of the fronts. In addition to that, plot threads were introduced and dropped without resolution, such as the conflict between the main character (skeptic) and the other main character's (psychic) best friend and the dropping of the main mystery in favor of a second mystery that was introduced late in the book. The book is written from a dual first person point of view, and since the writing is relatively impersonal, it was very hard to tell who is speaking at what point in the chapters. People love dual first person point of view, but the only time it should be used is when the narration is personal, which it was not here. Third person omniscient would have been far better for the type of writing this author does, where intimate thoughts and feelings are not revealed through the internal narration but only through the external.Overall, the plot was all over the place and I just didn't care about it, or, because the narration was very impersonal, any of the characters. It had very low steam, the romance was basically non-existent and felt very forced, and the plot jerked all over the place with no focus on anything. This is my first book by this author and I can honestly tell you that it's going to be my last.
I am a sucker for any story that involves psychics/mediums and the paranormal. This author was a new one for me but with the subject matter and blurb, I figured “why not?” Turns out, I loved it! This book has several of my favorite things: paranormal subject matter, humor, snark, and people finding love. One thing about the romance in this book, it is there but it is not the whole sum of the story. Julian and Oscar are trying to solve what is going at the Hendricks House and wind up with more than one mystery. These two have instant chemistry, but there actually isn’t a whole lot of steam in this book so if that is what you look for primarily in a book, this one probably isn’t for you. This one is more about the whole story overall and the ultimate partnership that is going to come out of it. I, for one, look forward to the further adventures of the crew of the show Bump in the Night. I love the characters introduced. Oscar is a medium who has been producing a low budget show with his friend and partner Ezra. Julian is struggling to find a job that allows him to use his PHd, after a disastrous event with a previous job. He takes the job as the token skeptic at the prodding of his sister Cece and her husband Jake who wants to produce a paranormal show. It is obvious from the beginning that Jake has secrets and an agenda all his own. I felt sorry for Cece getting caught up in all of this. Julian loves his twin very much and would do just about anything to protect her, even put up with his jackass of a brother in law. What winds up happening is a twist that I didn’t see coming and I enjoyed the surprise of it. This was a really good book and I will be looking for more, both in this series and by this author.
