Ms Burrowes is clearly a talented and accomplished author who is able to bring dimension and depth to a genre which is overpopulated with tripe. I was blown away with the beginning chapters. The premise of a man facing hanging awhile languishing in notorious Newgate Prison is gripping and certainly not an ordinary beginning. The pregnant widowed daughter of an obsessive cleric who comes to save souls in this prison offers a terrific complimentary romantic couple. These main romantic interests are both interesting and likeable. Secondary characters such as Ned add meaningful depth and interest to the basic story outline. And some needed humor.So I was totally engaged in the book until about the middle. At that point, both too much and not quite enough began to happen. It became something of a muddle. I have a problem when an author feels the need to interject characters who are clearly planned as main characters in upcoming books. A little goes a long way with that. Too much and it deflects from the book I paid for and am investing my time in. It becomes a gimmick.The last third of the book when the "mystery" got solved was a complete disappointment. It became almost farcical by the time the villain was confronted. Nothing rang true. When an author develops characters and uses a specific historical setting of time and place, the actions must remain true to those parameters. The ending was forced, felt false, and dragged too long. Two very very intelligent people and their clever associates acted very dumb. MY ONE AND ONLY DUKE by Grace Burrowes is a novel of amazing joy. Yes, it begins with Quinn, a distinguished gentleman in Newgate prison, about to be hanged for murder. The widowed, pregnant daughter of a minister visiting the prison comes to know Quinn and to her great surprise, he offers her marriage. He is a prosperous banker who knew great hardship growing up and feels compelled to see Jane comfortable, knowing he is easily able to afford what will be a final kindness in his life. They are married and he leaves her to be hanged for a crime he did not commit.But one cannot hang the long-lost Duke of Walden.So begins Quinn and Jane’s marriage: a pardoned felon who is a new Duke and who has no idea who set him up for murder, a wife who is pregnant by another man, and a houseful of unusual relatives and slovenly servants. It is a novel that combines mystery and the sadness of remembered hardship and abuse. But, still, it truly is a novel of amazing joy.Quinn is urban and gentle, but with a will of iron and astute insight into the minds of his fellow man.
